Gibraltar is the ideal summer break destination

If you are planning a summer break look no further than Gibraltar! Located on the Southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, Gibraltar is one of the most popular Mediterranean holiday destinations. The country is a British Overseas Territory and ideal for tourists from the UK, looking for a staycation spot. Gibraltar shares a narrow land border with Spain and is close to Morocco. These factors make it a very attractive destination to visit and travel further to both Spain and Morocco.

In terms of accommodation, Gibraltar offers plenty of options to cater to all types of travellers.

Those looking to stay in comfort and luxury will find the 4-star hotels in Gibraltar well suited to their needs.

Settle into the plush surroundings of the Caleta Palace Gibraltar and you will feel like it is a home away from home!

Some of the best attractions to visit include:

Upper Rock Nature Reserve: One of the most unique landforms on the European continent, the Rock of Gibraltar is also the most popular attraction. Except for the main lookouts, the majority of its upper areas comprise the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. There are several notable attractions in the reserve including the famous St Michael’s Cave.

Gibraltar Museum: Visitors get to learn about the fascinating history of Gibraltar from prehistoric and Phoenician times, through an impressive collection of relics, artefacts and exhibits. These also include the periods Gibraltar had the Moors and Spanish rule over the country.

Apes' Den: The Barbary Macaques are the most well-known residents of Gibraltar. They probably arrived from the African Continent thousands of years ago, when Gibraltar and Africa shared a common land border. Most of the 300 strong groups of primates are near Ape’s Den, near the middle cable-car station. More of these apes are live at the Great Siege Tunnels and the cable-car station at the summit.

Gorham's Cave Complex: The cave complex was among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of 2016. These comprise four caves that are of immense historical significance and located on the Southeast Coast of Gibraltar. There is archaeological evidence that our human ancestors the Neanderthals inhabited the area many millennia ago.

St Michael’s Cave: An incredible creation of nature, visitors can travel to St. Michael’s Cave on foot, from the Ape’s Den or walk down St Michael’s Road from the summit cable-car station to reach the caves. The latter is a 25-minute walk with some wonderful scenery to admire along the route. A cavernous complex, St Michael’s Cave has stalactites and stalagmites formations and in pre-historic times was home to the Neolithic inhabitants. The cave looks incredibly beautiful when it is lit up with colours, which reflect off the natural formations.

O’Hara’s Battery: A gun battery fortification it is a 15-minute stroll from the summit’s cable-car station down St Michael’s Road. Switch to O’Hara’s Road and it leads straight to O’Hara’s Battery. Located at the highest point of the Rock, it was built to defend the island country. However, it did not live up to its purpose and earned the nickname ‘O’Hara’s Folly’!
